The FTC Just Sued Toast Over “$0 a Month.” What Is Your POS Really Costing You?

A quick look at the lawsuit, and a five-minute way to find out what you really pay for card processing.

$0 a month for your POS. It sounds like the easiest yes in the world.

Then, on October 29, 2026, the FTC and eight states sued Toast, one of the biggest names in restaurant technology. Their claim: the cost did not disappear. It moved into higher fees on every card payment.

What the FTC says happened

The complaint alleges that Toast:

  • Charged fees that were not clearly disclosed

  • Enrolled restaurants in add-ons they say they never agreed to

  • Advertised 24/7 support that some owners say they could not reach

Toast disagrees with the allegations and says it will defend itself. A court will decide, and that could take years.

Your fees do not wait for a verdict

Win or lose, your processing fees come out of every card sale. Add up the fees on your statement, then divide by your card sales. That is your effective rate. Do you know yours?
